Injury Q & A

What is an injury?

An injury refers to bodily damage resulting from an accident, fall, or assault. This includes cuts, scrapes, lacerations, and puncture wounds. Injuries are common and can happen anytime and anywhere.

Pete is an experienced family nurse practitioner who provides injury care at his practice. He’s certified in wound care and surgical debridement. He has worked in emergency rooms and urgent care clinics, managing minor traumas.

Pete’s training and experience allow him to manage all sorts of injuries at his practice, so you don’t have to go to the emergency room.

When do I need professional injury care?

You need professional injury care if you have a laceration (a deep cut or tear) or open wound. You also need professional injury care if a cut or laceration continues to bleed after 15 minutes of pressure.

Pete also recommends that you come in for immediate treatment for any kind of injury or wound if you have a medical condition like diabetes or poor circulation that puts you at greater risk of infection.

Cuts with jagged edges also benefit from medical intervention for proper closure and healing. You also need medical care for animal bites and injuries filled with dirt or debris because of the risk of infection.

What happens during injury care?

The specifics of your injury care will depend on your injury. Pete reviews your symptoms and examines your wound. He also asks about your medical history and the medications you take.

He then provides the appropriate medical care, which can include stitches, cleaning and debriding, or splinting. For open wounds, Pete also applies an antibacterial cream after cleaning and before covering it with a bandage.

If he suspects you have a fracture, Pete will request X-rays before splinting.

What happens after injury care?

Pete provides specific instructions on how to care for your injury at home. He might also schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your healing, remove sutures, or provide additional wound care as needed.

Pete will refer you to an orthopedic surgeon for severe or complicated fractures.
